Wool is a natural wonder. It’s breathable, self-cleaning, insulating even when wet. With the right care, a good wool sweater can last for decades, and often becomes a timeless favorite passed down across generations.

Wool care. The Dale way

Gro Eide, Dale of Norway’s longtime Quality Controller, has spent over 30 years making sure our garments meet the highest standards. She’s seen firsthand what works, and what doesn’t when it comes to caring for wool.

"The biggest mistake most people make is to wash wool
incorrectly and wash it too often”

“My best tip for preserving wool garments for
as long as possible is not to wash them too often,
and instead hang them out to air.”

-Gro Eide

To keep your wool sweaters lasting for many years while retaining their excellent quality, we’ve put together six top care tips from Gro:

  1. Wash less, air more

Wool doesn’t need frequent washing. In most cases, all it needs is fresh air.

Hang your sweater outside or in a steamy bathroom to let it breathe. It helps preserve the fiber’s natural structure and saves energy too. Avoid wearing the same garment every day to let it rest between uses.

  2. Spot-Clean Stains

If you get a small stain, don’t wash the whole sweater.

Use a damp cloth to gently clean the area instead. Less washing means longer life for the wool.

  3. Store it the right way

When not in use, fold your sweater and store it flat, never on a hanger, which can stretch it.

Make sure it’s clean and dry before packing it away, and use a sealed container or bag to protect it from moths, dust, and moisture.

4. Wash with care. Only when necessary

Always check the care label first. If it says hand wash, use cold water (max 30°C/ 85F) and a wool-specific detergent. Gently squeeze, and never wring the garment.

If it’s marked machine washable, use a wool cycle, cold water, and the correct detergent. Don’t overload the drum, and never use fabric softener.

5. Dry Flat. Protect the shape

After washing, lay the garment flat on a towel and reshape it if needed.

Never hang a wet wool sweater, it can stretch and lose its shape.
Air dry only; avoid tumble dryers and direct heat.

6. Pilling Happens. It’s natural, and easy to fix

Pilling (those little wool balls) is natural, especially in areas exposed to friction like seat belts or bags.

Use a fabric shaver, wool comb, or simply pick them off by hand.

Some yarn types and knit structures pill more than others, it doesn’t mean the sweater is worn out, just that it’s being loved and used.
