Setesdal Lusekofte Jacket - Norwegian Wool

The Setesdal design is Norway’s most famous pattern. This is the original "lusekofte," knitted in 100% wool, with Norwegian-made pewter clasps and woven bands, identical to the original design. The wool jacket features the well-known "luse" pattern and traditional crosses, which were originally knitted in to protect against evil spirits.

The Setesdal jacket in the beige colorway (M00) is made from 100% premium undyed lightweight wool, utilizing the natural colors of the animal fiber with unique shades ranging from darker to lighter tones. This approach not only highlights the beauty of the wool in its most authentic form but also preserves its natural qualities by eliminating the dyeing process, resulting in a garment that is as natural as it is stylish.

The Setesdal jacket in off white and black colorways (A and F) are made of 100% Norwegian wool, which is known for its warmth, breathability, and durability. The Norwegian wool comes from sheep that have adapted to the challenging weather conditions in Norway, and the fibers are especially well-suited for regulating body temperature and protecting against the cold. The wool is naturally moisture-wicking and has a unique ability to insulate. Norwegian wool is an important element in preserving traditional Norwegian craftsmanship, and the wool used in the Setesdal jacket is carefully selected to ensure high quality and durability.

Our undyed version of the Setesdal jacket (beige jacket, color M00) is made from premium undyed lightweight wool from Uruguay, utilizing the natural colors of the animal fiber, ranging from darker to brighter tones. These different shades are sorted and blended into mélanges, creating a limited range of natural colors. Since there is no dyeing process involved, the yarn remains 100% natural and biodegradable. The absence of dyeing eliminates the need for the chemicals typically used in this process, while also conserving resources like water and energy.

The "lusekofte," with its roots in Setesdal valley, is one of the most iconic symbols of Norwegian folk culture. It was first knitted in the 19th century and was traditionally worn as workwear and festive clothing. The pattern, which consists of small, light designs – or "lice" – gets its name from these small figures that resemble lice (“lus” in Norwegian). Each region of Norway has its own variations of the sweater, but the Setesdal "lusekofte" pattern is the most famous, and the sweater represents both tradition and Norwegian craftsmanship in its purest form.
